Biography

Major Russ Mayne, CD

 

Major Mayne was born in Springhill, Nova Scotia in 1946. He served as an Army Cadet, with 2553 (North Nova Scotia Highlanders) Corps, RCACC, at Oxford Regional High School, from 1961-64.

 

In 1964, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and, after basic training at RCAF Station St. Jean, qualified as a Communications Operator at Station Clinton and was posted to Station Namao, in Alberta. He was given an honourable release in 1966.

 

Maj Mayne has had a long and distinguished career as a Cadet Instructor Officer, which began in 1971, when he joined 2824 (Cadet Organization Police School) Corps, RCACC in 1971 as a Civilian Instructor. He was commissioned as a 2Lt in 1972 and subsequently served as Attendance Officer, Transport Officer, Quartermaster, and Deputy Commanding Officer; the latter for 19 years – serving four Commanding Officers, all of whom were serving Police Officers. While with the COPS Corps, he assisted in establishing the Malton, Meadowvale and Erin Mills Companies.

 

As Captain (1976), Maj Mayne was appointed Commanding Officer of 75 (Toronto Scottish Regiment) RCACC, from 1993-96 and Commanding Officer of 337 (Queen’s York Rangers) RCACC, from 1996-2002. He was promoted to substantive Major in 2001. In July 2005, he was appointed CO of his fourth Corps – 2754 (Toronto Service Battalion) RCACC, where he established Bravo Company at St. Charles Garnier School and a Corps brass and reed band.

 

Maj Mayne has also served three summers at the Caribbean Cadet Camps in the Barbados and Trinidad.

 

In his civilian life, Maj Mayne is a 35+-year employee of Mississauga Hydro and has received numerous community service awards. He has received the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD) and Clasp and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, as well as being made a Knight Commander of the Order of St. John (Knights of Malta) and is a member of the Royal Canadian Military Institute.
