Biography

Capt Harris Chapman Harper

 

Harris Chapman Harper was born in Port Elgin N.B. on August 27, 1902 to Joe and 
Agatha Harper. He attended school in Port Elgin and after graduating, enrolled in the Provincial Normal School in Fredericton. While in Fredericton he became a Sergeant in the 7th Battalion Canadian Machine Gun Corp. 

He received his First and Superior Class License on Jan 1, 1922. His first school was a one room country school at Woodside, near Port Elgin. From Sept 1923 to June 1925 he served as Principal of Rothesay Consolidated School. During that time he coached the school hockey team which won the Provincial Championship. He joined the staff of Aberdeen High School in September of 1925. In 1927/early 28 he became the Principal of the newly opened Prince Edward School. He organized and instructed the schoolís Cadet Corp and eventually was commissioned as Captain in the Cadet Services of Canada. 

During the 1930ís the Rifle Team from Prince Edward Cadet Corp, under Harris Harper, won the Dominion of Canada, DCRA, rifle championship for Cadets. During World War 2, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 5th (Reserve) Armoured Regiment 1/8th Princess Louise Hussars, Mar 20, 1942. 

He continued to command Cadet Corp #1387 until it was disbanded, June 30/47.
