Archibald Barnes was studied at the St Johnís Wood School of Art and Royal Academy Schools. He acknowledged that John Singer Sargent and Charles Sims were a great influence on his work. He became a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1923, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1924, and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1925. Works by him are in the collections of Manchester City Art Gallery, Towneley Hall Art Gallery, Kirklees Museums and Galleries and Oldham Art Gallery
