Capt Steve A. Martens


Capt Martens enrolled cadets in 1966 with the 2803 20th Field Artillery Regt (M) Cadet Corp in Ft McMurray AB where he achieved the rank of Master Warrant Officer. In 1970 he enrolled in the Canadian Forces Reserves, 20th Field Artillery Regiment in Edmonton and achieved the rank of Gunner. In 1972 he enrolled in the Regular Forces as a Military Police Officer. 

On release from the Regular Force in 1975, he went back into the Reserves until 1976 as a Military Police Officer with the rank of Master Corporal. Upon leaving the Cdn Forces he was employed as a Prison Guard and then onto Training Officer for the City of Yellowknife Police Dept.

In 1977 he was employed as a Crash Fire Rescue Specialist with Transport Canada and went on to achieving the rank of Fire Chief in 1982 after he completed his Engineering Degrees in Fire Protection and Fire Prevention from the University of Minnesota and Texas A&M respectively. He retired as a Fire Chief in 1994 due to Federal Govít downsizing. 

He reenrolled in the Canadian Forces Reserves in 1996 and was commissioned to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in 1997. He was assigned as the Deputy Commanding Officer and Training Officer for the 2589 Army Cadets in Churchill Manitoba. In 1998 he moved to Scotch Creek BC and was assigned to 1787 RMR Cadet Corp as the NSCE/Gold Star Coordinator. In 1999 appointed as Training officer and in February 2000 he was promoted to rank of Captain and appointed as Commanding Officer of 1787 RCACC in Salmon Arm until Sept 2003. 

Captain Martens is presently assigned as the Area Information Technology Assistant for the Thompson Region and is the Assistant Area Cadet Instructor Cadre Officer for the Okanogan. 

Capt Martens is married to Derry (Slager), formerly of Lloydminster AB and they have four children all daughters, and three grandchildren. Capt Martens is a licensed Pilot, Master Scuba Diver/Dive Master as well as a First Aid/CPR Instructor. Since his youth he has been an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoys the outdoors. Captain Martens has built (On his Own) their retirement home and is enjoying a rich and rewarding retirement in the North Shuswap.
