EX: ALPHA - July 1-6, 1977

"Ex Alpha" was the first of two significant, one-week long training and recruiting exercises held over the summer of 1977. Ex Alpha was held July 1-7 and Ex Bravo was held Aug 1-7.  Organized by the CO, Major Vic Haulgate, the Supply Officer Lt Dick Turnbull, regular force volunteer Cpl Ted Yerex and several sets of parents including the Neatbys and Huberawichs, it was a tremendous success. On Ex Alpha, some 20 cadets along with 15 new recruits camped for a week long exercise. The exercises were held at Cobble Flats, now part of Kananaskis Country, then just part of the Bow-Crow Forest Reserve. Just 100 feet from the Elbow River, the campsite was perfectly situated. 1 Service Battalion, the affiliated unit supported the exercises with vehicles, tents, food and supplies. 1942 era bell tents were set up in the woods along the river bank. This was the very beginning of the cadet careers for many new cadets in the corps.

The cadets learned about bushcraft, fieldcraft, radio procedures, how to read maps. As well there was time for capture-the-flag, hiking and even a climb to Moose Mountain Ice Caves 20 kilometers north of the campsite.

EX: BRAVO - August 1-6, 1977

"Ex Bravo" was the second of two, one-week long training and recruiting exercises held over the summer of 1977. On Ex Bravo, some 15 cadets who for whatever reasons could not attend summer camp were treated to a week in the mountains along with 15 new recruits.
