1979 Chain Lakes Exercise

The exact name of the exercise is forgotten, but it was the first spring exercise of the year taking place at Chain Lakes, about 80 kilometers south of Calgary. As a day exercise, it was quite successful, we returned by supper time after hiking a small ridge and practicing first aid training. For the middle of March, there was very little snow on the ground.

1979 Tattoo

The Annual Royal Alberta Unites Services Institute sponsored Cadet Tattoo started in 1967 with the centennial celebrations. The success of the 1967 show carried on until 1981. Army cadet corps, Air cadet squadrons and Sea cadet corps from across southern Alberta practiced for months, each unit was tasked with a different performance: precision drill, Drummers Call, Flag Drill, Troop of the flags, Feu de joi and of course the Retreat. Our unit was part of the Honour Guard for the reviewing officer, the Honorable Ralph Steinhauer, Lt Gov of Alberta. The annual event was held at the Stampede Corral in Calgary. The stands sat over 5000 guests and the usually ice covered floor could easily accommodate several hundred cadets at once.

In 1980 with Alberta's 75th anniversary celebrations, the Tattoo was taken on the road to Lethbridge and Edmonton as well.

Guard commander Sgt Mario Rochon in front of the guard, in a few weeks Mario would age out of cadets and join the regular force serving with the 12eRBC.
