This day in Canadian Military History...

9 August 1757
The British garrison at Ft. William Henry surrenders to a superior French force after a week-long siege. As the British leave the fort and march south to Ft. Edward, native allies of the French attack the column, killing 50 and taking 400 prisoners. The massacre is halted after French troops intervene.

9 August 1945
A second atomic bomb is dropped on the city of Nagasaki, prompting the unconditional surrender of Japan and bringing the Second World War to a swift conclusion.
