This day in Canadian Military History...

13 August 1756
French troops occupy Ft. Ontario (near Oswego, N.Y.) and prepare an assault on the larger stronghold of Ft. George. The death of the British commander, Colonel Mercer, in the barrage saps the English garrison's already low morale.



13 August 1814

British artillery batteries open fire on the Americans occupying Ft. Erie. The barrage is expected to soften resistance in anticipation of a British assault three days from now.
