This day in Canadian Military History...

8 August 1918
The Battle of Amiens begins as Canadian, British, Australian, and French troops advance across No Man's Land and through the German defences. By nightfall the Canadians have advanced 11 kilometers; they capture 5,033 prisoners and 161 guns for 3,839 casualties. Four Victoria Crosses are also won today.



8 August 1944

Operation Totalize is in full swing, with Canadian armour and infantry columns pushing south from Caen along the Falaise road.
